Join us as we welcome Terry Virts, former NASA astronaut and pilot of the space shuttle Endeavor, to explore space and the planets in a whole new perspective through the stories and images that he collected during his time spent in the International Space Station (ISS).

Virts began his career in the United States Air Force and earned his pilot’s wings in 1989 at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona. After completing basic fighter pilot training and formal training in the F-16 Fighting Falcon, he was then assigned to the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing. By 1997, his distinction in service earned him an invitation to Test Pilot School, graduating to become an experimental test pilot and going on to log over 3,000 hours in over 40 different aircrafts.

In 2000, NASA selected Virts for pilot training. Upon graduation, he would go on to become lead astronaut for the NASA T-38 program, a crewmember for the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory, support astronaut for the Expedition 9 crew, the pilot of STS-130 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor, and commander at ISS. He now serves in CAPCOM at mission control in Houston.

During his time at ISS, Virts installed a Cupola module that allowed him to capture a previously unheard-of 360-degree view from the station. As commander of ISS, he utilized this powerful photographic tool to capture the magnificent and massive beauty of space with a perspective that had to that point never have been seen by those of us here on Earth.

After taking more photographs than any other commander of ISS, Virts’ breathtaking work was used in the National Geographic book View from Above and IMAX film A Beautiful World, capturing our imagination and giving a better understanding about the sheer magnitude of the universe. Although, to hear Virts tell it, no photo could ever capture the perfect shade of blue in a sunrise viewed from outer space.

Don’t miss this chance to explore the depths of the universe from a well-traveled storyteller with a perspective that very few will ever have, sharing a portion of the hundreds of thousands of images and hours of video footage that he captured during his 200 days in space. A post-show meet and greet will be available to VIP ticket buyers.

Books are available for advance purchase through our partnering bookstore, The Novel Neighbor of Webster Groves.  Books will be available for pick-up the night of the show and the author will be available for a book signing immediately following the event.  All books must be purchased through the Novel Neighbor in order to participate in the book signing.
