You may know Patinkin as Saul Berenson on the Showtime series Homeland, or you may recall his infamous and iconic role as Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride where he delivered one of the most quotable lines in a generation, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
In addition to his long career in film and television, Patinkin has also enjoyed a great deal of success on Broadway, including a Tony award for Best Actor for his role as Che Guevera in Evita, as well as nominations for Sunday in the Park with George and The Wild Party.
In Mandy Patinkin Presents: Diaries, the legendary performer explores his career through some of his most memorable and celebrated Broadway numbers, along with selections from his newest albums, the Diary trilogy, on Nonesuch Records. Patinkin will also perform unique interpretations from all-time classics like “Cat’s in the Cradle” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as well as modern-day classics from songwriters like Rufus Wainwright, Lyle Lovett, Tom Waits, and Randy Newman. And of course, Patinkin will honor his love of musical theatre with a selection of classic Broadway songs from luminary composer Stephen Sondheim.
In his Diary series, Patinkin worked with producer Thomas Bartlett, also known as Doveman, to bring his own vision and interpretation to songs from well-respected composers and musicians, as well as original songs written by Patinkin himself. “After thirty years my musical collaborator, Paul Ford, retired. I wasn’t sure if that meant I would have to as well. But my dear friend Bob Hurwitz [of Nonesuch Records] introduced me to Thomas Bartlett, who introduced me to an entirely new way of making music … in his studio, hours of playing, singing, and recording, never searching for the illusion of perfection,” Patankin explains. “We’ve decided to share our music making journey with you, in the form of a Diary.”
With Adam-Ben David providing piano accompaniment, Patinkin is in his natural element, captivating an audience with his magnetic on-stage presence and dynamic vocal performance. A born storyteller, this electric performance inspired the New Yorker to rave, “Mandy Patinkin is in the business of showstopping.” And that’s exactly what he does in this powerful, passionate and dazzling evening of song.
