Fantasies of the Past

Joanna Mendoza and Friends:
Julia Sakharova, violin, Jeanine York-Garesche, clarinet, and Alla Voskoboynikova, piano, perform works by Scriabin, Martinů, Hindemith, and Walter Mays.

What is a musical fantasy? How does music from another time spark the imagination of a composer? And how would a present-day composer answer these questions? Join us as award-winning American composer and Professor of Theory and Composition at Wichita State University, Walter Mays, joins us to speak about his Scarlattiana, a trio for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano. Also hear the imaginative style of Scriabin, the reimagining of English madrigals by Bohuslav Martinů, and a 20th century fantasia in Paul Hindemith’s romantic Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op. 11, No. 4. An enchanting evening not to miss!

Martinů: Three Madrigals for Violin and Viola
Mays: Scarlattiana
Scriabin: Two Poems, opus 32
 Feuillet d'album, opus 45, No.1
Etude in C Sharp minor, opus 2 No.1
Hindemith: Sonata for VIola and Piano, Op. 11, No. 4
