MADCO’s collaboration with German choreographer Nejla Yatkin is particularly timely. This November, the company will take on the internationally acclaimed artist’s powerfully personal Wallstories, coinciding with the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Wallstories fixes a lens on the human stories beneath Cold War politics. Yatkin, herself a teenager in 1980s Berlin, explains that while growing up, she “personally felt the threat of imminent conflict… (an) ever-present issue in conversations, meetings and demonstrations. ...You were always aware of it as it demarcated freedom from autocracy.”
Wallstories was selected as one of the Top 10 dances of 2009 in the Washington Post and awarded the Overall Excellence in Dance at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2011.
With support from the Goethe Institut and German Culture Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Although the format is different, this is an E3! performance. Arrive early to view the exhibit "Long Live Freedom" in the lobby. The photo display, presented by UMSL's German Culture Center, recounts courageous acts by individuals and groups opposed to the Nazi regime. Discussion with artist, choreographer and special guests will take place post-performance, then stay after for a reception in the lobby.
