Escape to a historic night on 18th & Vine’s Jazz District with world-renowned saxophonist Bobby Watson and vocalist Angela Hagenbach -- both Kansas City residents.

Johnny Mandel said, “Having my songs sung along with Henry Mancini and Michel Legrand is wonderful, but the greatest treat of all is to hear what the beautiful and gifted singer Angela Hagenbach does with them.” Clark Terry, Russell Malone, and Frank Foster have joined him in praise of Hagenbach.

Twice the State Department chose Angela to represent the U.S. as a Cultural Jazz Ambassador touring 17 countries. She is a masterful interpreter, and accomplished songwriter who has two tunes featured in the film Last Will starring Tatum O’Neil. Make space between your Sarah Vaughn and Shirley Horn albums for Angela’s sultry contralto voice.

GRAMMY ®-nominated saxophonist Bobby Watson is internationally renowned as music director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He appears on 14 of Blakey’s recordings, and worked with notable icons Max Roach, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, and more.

Bobby led highly acclaimed groups like Horizon, and wrote original music for Robert DeNiro’s film, A Bronx Tale. To date, Watson has recorded 28 records as a leader and appears on ~100 recordings. After three decades in New York, he returned to UMKC to direct jazz studies in 2000.

If you like “Jeep’s Blues,” “Vine Street Rumble,” then you will also enjoy “Kansas City Here I Come” and the special arrangement of “Paper Moon” being written by Melton Mustafa for this concert.

Previous Jazz Edge Orchestra (JEO) members Joshua Williams (trumpet) and Khamali-Cuffie Moore (trumpet) will reunite with the orchestra for this engagement, after attending UMKC.

Recognized as a dynamic, driving and versatile ensemble for over 25 years, The Jazz Edge Orchestra (JEO) delivers original charts combined with exciting contemporary R&B, soul and blues. Under the direction of Thomas Moore, its unmatched menu of rhythmic renditions yields great creativity and depth.

The JEO has performed with giants Clark Terry, Willie Akins, Lester Bowie, James Moody, Frank Foster, Oliver Nelson, Jr., Keyon Harrold, Russell Gunn, Eric Person, Denise Thimes, Frank Wess, Chuck Berry, Geri Allen, The Cunninghams, Wallace Roney, the Bosman Twins, and plenty more at venues like Powell Symphony Hall, The St. Louis Arch, and St. Louis Science Center.
